Windows like shared folder?

I swore that the 'Public' folder was for exactly this reason. Doesn't GNOME
have some sort of app/daemon that lets you know others are near by, and if
possible share data via the 'Public' folder? I swear I remember Jorge and
some of the Michigan guys showing it off at Penguicon this year.
