Find a project on launchpad relating to ubuntu/kubuntu, find a bug in the 
project, fix the bug. Repeat. Kontact for instance, tends to have alot of 
issues and should provide you with the needed basic knowledge of the KDE 
system. 

Not the most exiting thing in the world, I agree - but it's where you should 
start.
