ok my problem was different, at some point my kdeprintrc was modified by 
something (in the last few weeks) to no longer specify, the remote cups 
server so it fell back to the kubuntu-default-settings of localhost, after 
fixing that i can print again

so the problem does seem to be just with the local cups server like Emanuel is 
suggesting
