media:/ problems : what is a developer's perspective?

Hi, at kubuntu-users we have quite an elaborate discussion on media:/
problems.

The thread is called:
how to disable media:/ feature?

media:/ protocol fails:

1. to display hard disk partitions
2. to show contents of mounted floppies
3. fails to show unconnected cdrom /flash drives (I guess this is a
feature, not a bug, but some complain about it anyway).

I think these are quite important failures, since media:/ protocol is
THE standard way of reaching files in places other than the home
directory from all of the KDE apps.

Could someone of the kubuntu / kde developers jump into the discussion
and offer us a perspective?
