Size of the font should not depend on hardware setup but what is good for
the eyes.

The size (take a ruler) of the font should be identical independently of
the Monitor size and resolution.  If not there's a problen with the
detection of your monitor.   Of course the smaller the monitor the less
characters fit on it.

My first reaction was like yours.  Then I realized that I worked much more
relaxed on kubuntu than on my other boxes with  10pt fonts.  Now I use
everywhere ubuntus default.  YMMV.
