I had this problem with Suse once and it is really a pain. You have to
see if the Video driver was compiled into your kernel. Open your
X86Config file from /etc/X11/ and see what module you have for your
video. It will probably be ati. Check to see if that module is loaded
by modprobe and if not you will have to force load that into your
system at start up. I can't remember how off the top of my head, but I
am sure you can Google that.
