I think the real problem in KMail is in the handling of locally stored
emails.

Since I installed a local server to fetch POP3 mails from my ISP and
serve them to KMail as IMAP4, the problem has largely gone away.

The problem was still present at in interim stage when I was downloading
all mails from my IMAP4 server, but now that I leave them on the server
I don't see the problem any more.
