I have found the cause of this problem. I am developing Qt apps and I
had a Qt 4.7.2 directory in the path. This worked fine in 10.10 but
after upgrade to 11.04 this broke some KDE applications (kmail, dolphin
for sure).

When I have removed Qt 4.7.2 from the path, the applications start and
work fine.
