Just want to confirm this bug for Karmic and Lucid.
It is related to GDM, does not appear with KDM (at least for me).
Most likely the root cause can be found in the file kdisplaymanager.cpp (formerly dmctl.cpp):

If it is due to a change in GDM it should affect all distributions and not be (k)ubuntu specific.
