Well, it seems kubuntu 9.10 is affected to.

I've began to receive this message some months ago with KDE SC 4.3.x,
upgrading to 4.4 did not cure it.

Usually "The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly" appears when opening file dialog when you are back to PC after some hours of user inactivity. Also can not open new folders in Dolphin, Bookmarks in Konqueror.
But it seems continuous  working session (< 9 hours) triggers it too.

Reboot helps but I have to do fsck and reboot again.
