And the differences are:

  24.6% ( 7.4) <kernel core> : hrtimer_start (tick_sched_timer)
(but these wakeups are most likely duplicates of the hi-res timeouts below. otherwise there would be closer to 17 extra wakeups instead of 10)

  14.7% ( 4.4) konqueror : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup)
  10.0% ( 3.0) knotify4 : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup)
   3.6% ( 1.1) kwin : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup)

   3.3% ( 1.0) Xorg : queue_delayed_work (delayed_work_timer_fn)
(delayed_work looks more kernel-specific. Maybe Intel KMS, I dunno.)

   3.3% ( 1.0) hald-addon-stor : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup)
(is present in 8.04, but only at _0.5_ wakeups/s)

   0.9% ( 0.3) plasma : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup)
   0.7% ( 0.2) kded4 : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup)
   0.7% ( 0.2) krunner : schedule_hrtimeout_range (hrtimer_wakeup)
   0.7% ( 0.2) knotify4 : futex_wait (hrtimer_wakeup)
