Thanks for looking into this.

I cannot reproduce the bug when compiz is disabled. I could not test
with the nv driver as apparently xgl support is missing then.

I also forgot to mention, that the behavour does not occur always,
sometimes the GUI reacts fine, but some actions especially minimizing &
restoring the window seem to help triggering the bug. Also closer
observation showed, that other parts of kate are affected as well like
the open-files sidebar which is sometimes not properly refreshed on
screen.

Also kate has a different look&feel as other kde applications (such as kaffeine). I believe it uses a newer qt-engine or alike?
I suppose an easy workaround would be to tell kate to use the old engine instead, as I never encountered this with the old kde look&feel. Though, I’m not sure, how.
