[Bug 383350] [NEW] [karmic] plasma takes almost one minut to start

Binary package hint: kdebase

After upgrading to karmic from jaunty, plasma started taking an enormous amount of time to start. I can see akonadi notifications and even sounds from other applications but the desktop doesn't show up for more than a minute. Stopping plasma from konsole with:
$ kquitapp plasma-desktop

and then launching plasma again I get something like:

plasma-desktop(5191): Communication problem with  "plasma-desktop" , it probably crashed.                      
Error message was:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." " 

and 10 to 20 seconds latter:

Unrecognized character: /
Unrecognized character: /                
ERROR: syntax error


$ lsb_release -rd
Description:    Ubuntu karmic (development branch)

$ apt-cache policy kdebase
kdebase:
