I encountered this problem while trying to run the upgrade from kde 4.1
to 4.2 from Intrepid Ibex listed here:

http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2

To get around this problem, I was able to run the following command:

sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/kde-window-
manager_4%3a4.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa7_i386.deb

This pushed through the change, though failed on some other
dependencies. But then I was able to successfully run this command:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

And I'm up and running on kde 4.2. Thanks to Jonathan Thomas for the
tip.
