OK, here's the last video card in my drawer:
 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] (rev b2)
It's an AGP card, and the system appears stable running X and KDE.

So here's the bottom line:  kernel 2.6.15-26-686, and at least four
earlier 686 kernels, lock up solid during KDE initialization on my dual-
pIII system, Only when equipped with a Radeon 7000/VE AGP video card.

Next, I may try running this combination on a single-processor system,
but I'll leave that for another day.
