After updating to gwenview-1.2.0-0ubuntu2 (together with the rest of Ubuntu), the bug still occurs. 
 
It happens with all images, not just the one I used for the screenshots, so it's probably a (maybe platform- or 
endianness-specific) bug in the fast smoothing routine.
