The mainline builds in ~kernel-ppa/mainline/* are exactly that they are
mainline kernel without modification. They are built with the Ubuntu
config but that is all.

The ubuntu directory is in our git repository, and in each source
package which is an Ubuntu upload. If you are trying to make a 4.4
based kernle of your own can you not use the Xenial sources which are
4.4 already and have the Ubuntu sauce applied.
