be2net was added to the Lucid udebs as of Ubuntu-2.6.32-27.49. I don't 
remember what version of the kernel made it onto the 10.04.2 point release.

I'm a bit confused by your description. You say the 'Lucid network 
installer' doesn't work, then immediately follow that up with 'Lucid 
media and Maverick media and net install' work fine, which is kind of 
ambiguous (and contradictory to my mind).
