This is critical:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-jaunty.git;a=commit;h=0d3c04214230d4340345a7a5d5353883b3299d9f

If HPA is disabled then my raid (via dmraid) does not work. Even worse, on a normal reboot without full poweroff i see only offline members of my raid. That's definitely not expected this way.

Best solution: tell people the correct override option if they need it - usually they don't need it if they set the jumpers correctly on the harddrive. When dmesg|grep HPA shows a 32 GB limit then it clear that those jumpers are wrongly set which limit the hd size.

Also new Gigabyte boards store a BIOS backup at the end of the drive and set then HPA. Would be no good idea if this space is reused and then overritten.
