Ask for help regarding Ubuntu upgrade

Dear Sir or Madam,

Whilst automatically upgrading my laptop's software from Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy 
Badger into Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, a message pops up at the very moment of the 
computer's start saying: /dev/mapper/Ubuntu-root does not exist. 
I have all my most important data on this laptop. I'm not a computer scientist 
- can you help me in any way and advise what I could do in order to retrieve 
my computer?
