upgrade failed because some process like apt was already running.
so I booted the cd.
first it didn't recognize my video mode.  so I pressed Enter through everything and it did text mode install.
then I got
!!Select and Install Software
installation step failed
so I presses Enter again to continue
and picked install grub 2
grob failed to install.

overall, it was a colossal failure.
