[Bug 643318] [NEW] no-ACPI win98 box shuts down, leaves 4 dots screen

I installed 10.04 on an HP Pavilion 6530, an older windows 98 box(can't replace the cmos battery). 
Always when I shut down I hear the disks chatter and then park and turn off, but the monitor still shows the ubuntu "4 dots" screen.

what would be more appropriate is if ACPI is not available on machines
like this, if that is the problem indeed, is after shutting down
everything, to present a screen of "please turn off the computer".  like
windows 98 did.

it only has a cd drive and a wired internet connection for outside
access.
