re: camera functionality - yes I think your suggestion is good. The user should be able to browse their camera photos but not import them. That makes sense for the Ubuntu Light use case.

re: usb key - I played with this some more and you are correct that no
dialog appears. But if you plug in a usb key and choose file import, and
navigate to usb key and choose the folder from the usb key, you are
prompted with a dialog that asks if you want to "Copy into Library" or
"Create Links". After thinking about this some more, ideally we'd want
usb key to work just like plugging in a camera. That is, it would be
great if usb key showed up in tree view and user could browse their
photos from key but not be able to import them. Could you look into the
amount of work necessary to make this happen?

Just to clarify, ~/Pictures will in fact be mounted read-only as this is the users Windows data and we are not allowed to modify it. Does shotwell write information into it's Library location? If so then I suppose we should set the Library location to ~/ but automatically import from ~/Pictures using links but no copy. Does this make sense?
