Above are the results of my running     apport-collect -p linux 446790    .
The problem still exists in Ubuntu Release 10.04 (lucid), Kernel Linux 2.6.32-22-generic, GNOME 2.30.0 on a Dell Inspiron 1545n.
When I left click on the Suspend or Hibernate menu selection in the menu that drops down from the "C-" circular icon to the left of the user name in the Indicator Applet Session on the panel, the laptop does not suspend or hibernate. Instead, the screen saver starts.
