I had this problem, but it has disappeared totally for me. I had the
same symptoms: I could ssh into the frozen machine but video was frozen.
Only mouse would work.

It disappeared when I changed my computer case.

It may be hard to believe but the reason (I think) was that in my
previous case the graphics card (nVidia 260) was so cramped that it
actually had physical contact with the HD-bay. I guess that caused some
glitchy contact in some rare occations.

Just my 2 öre.
