(Corrected from the off-topic rant I first wrote before submission)
I will agree that connecting to a non-broadcasting SSID would be a
preferred feature when traveling to a network that you don't manage. I
agree on this ability solely for this purpose and not because you want
to use old insecure equipment to build a network and claim you have
"security" when you only have obscurity. Your best bet at security is
running a VPN over your WiFi if you must use your WiFi without upgrading
and want security. This will only break non-routable protocols (AoE,
IPX, etc).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wired_Equivalent_Privacy offers a nice
preview/overview in the second paragraph of the state of WEP (There's
probably a German version somewhere if you want it).
Due to the wide spread nature of this mentality (non-broadcasting SSID
offers "security"), the best way to resolve this long-term is to start
with making it painful if not impossible for admins to perform this on
APs. Clients will need this ability until everyone follows the
standard. I've also seen some Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista
clients using the WZCSVC respond poorly when trying a non-broadcasting
SSID even with the connect when not broadcasting checkbox is checked.
