I tried a few additional kernel parameters using the grub loader to see
if they had any effect on my machine:

i8042.noacpi=1 - didn't fix the problem
acpi_osi=Linux - didn't fix the issue

I've just upgraded my BIOS revision for my HP Presario v5000 - v5245eu:

Original: F.41
Now: F.54

I'll test that for a while and see if it fixes the problem for me. The
change log indicated that there had been a fix for mouse and keyboard
timing issues - fingers crossed.
