Same problem here on Ubuntu 10.04 RC (and 9.10) with Intel 3945ABG/BG
wireless card:

[   13.296985] iwl3945 0000:05:00.0: Detected Intel Wireless WiFi Link 3945ABG

Installing WICD is an ugly workaround.
