I'm likewise getting this issue on a new install of amd64 9.04.

However, I'm not convinced this is a kernel bug and not an X or gdm bug,
because it also happens when I log out and try to log back in without
restarting or shutting down, after successfully using my keyboard for a
while.  I'm working on a way to test my theory and track this bug down.
I'm an embedded software engineer, but I'm not familiar with the
codebase, so it may take me a while.
