[Bug 159963] network activity hangs the machine when using a 2.6.22-14-server

I installed ubuntu 7.10 on  a Acer travelmate 512dx (510 series) with a PCMCIA netgear FA411 ethernet adapter. I installed it without using the ethernet adapter.
When I started using the ethernet adapter the system began hanging after some network activity. For example I was able to start "sudo apt-get update", but the system hanged consistently after some downloading.

After installing the "linux-image-i386" I had no troubles anymore.
