[Bug 61911] Kernel upgrades in edgy trash kernel boot options for system with root partition running on top of LVM

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-generic

Edgy

LVM with a root partition running on a volume group. The only partition
not on top of LVM is the boot partition which is ext3.

Root partition is reiserfs.

This has been occurring for a while and I have just been fixing it each
time it appears but is seemingly not getting corrected at the source
so...

--------------------------

Any kernel upgrades trash menu.lst file. Existing and new kernel
entries are configured/reconfigured by the package install in the
following manner.

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.17-6-686 root=UUID=48764611-93ca-4588-98cf-
30de9507ad30 ro quiet splash

This causes the boot process to stall. It's either necessary to catch
the kernel upgrades when they occur and correct before a reboot or edit
the boot options in grub and fix afterwards.

The kernel option lines needs to be of the following form in my
configuration to successfully boot.

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.17-8-generic root=/dev/mapper/Ubuntu-root
ro quiet splash

And I wish the kernel package would leave it that way :-)

I am not sure if this is related to this system having been upgraded
from dapper (and possible breezy before that) but kernel upgrades are
rather impolite on this system.

I suspect it might be possible to configure this behaviour using the
automagic options in menu.lst but it might still be a nasty surprise for
someone the first time this occurs.

** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Untriaged
         Status: Unconfirmed
