Are you sure about this? I can corrupt the real-time clock by just
running the kernel. I used the kernel parameter init=/sbin/reboot to
reproduce the problem after some dozens of reboots. And as far as I know
no scripts in /etc/rc.d are run when I use a init parameter like this.

Maybe the hwclock script doesn't PRODUCE the problem but is the first
who SEE the problem? After the kernel has corrupted the real-time clock
I can use my laptop normally (except that the clock does not run forward
when laptop is powered down) as long as the BIOS doesn't do a full check
on startup. I've also seen this "select()" error message someone
mentioned. Maybe it comes from the hwclock script. But for me it looks
like this is just a consequence of the bug and not the producer.
