I have the same problem with a Dell Latitude D610. Suspend to ram worked until 2.6.15-20, and never worked again with newer kernels. 
At the moment I am running 2.6.15-19, and sleep works. Never tried suspend to disk.
I have noticed that with revision 19 (with which sleeps works) the kernel shows a lot of debug information before going to sleep. With revisions 20+ the screen simply goes blank (and doesn't wake up). Maybe a video card related problem?
