Is this the stock xorg ati driver, or perhaps fglrx? Maybe try which
ever one it isn't, see if the other one works.

This very well could be a hardware issue too. I have two machines with
broken cards (one ATI, one VIA Chromium), that lock up as soon as GL is
used. So maybe you can also disable glx and dri in the xorg.conf to see
if that helps.
