I notice an extra message in dmesg about ipw3945:

[4294694.286000] ipw3945: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:
[4294694.286000] Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work.

There is no hardware switch, it's a keyboard based switch (Fn-F5) but pressing that keyboard combination does not activate the wifi nor the bluetooth. I'll cc Matthew Garrett for this reason.
