It did not help enabling CONFIG_BOOTX_TEXT, but I found this in Debian.src.changelog in the latest linux-source-2.6.15 package:

linux-source-2.6.15 (2.6.15-4.4) dapper; urgency=low

  * Delete postinst.powerpc. Seems there's no more default coff target, and
    other assorted needed things in order to support mkvmlinuz bootloader.
    From what I gather, we only support NewWorld Macs anyway.


Could that be the problem on OldWorld Macs?
