To answer my own question: No, CONFIG_BOOTX_TEXT is not enabled in the dapper kernel (2.6.15-21 - does not boot on oldworld powermacs) while it is enabled in the breezy kernel (2.6.12-10 - boots fine on oldworld powermacs).

Please make a kernel with CONFIG_BOOTX_TEXT=y and tell me which daily build cdrom it is on. I will be happy to test it.
