I also have experienced this issue. It is exactly as ritvik describes:
hit CTRL+ALT+F7 to go back to GNOME, the screen flashes, and the GNOME
login screen appears. I am using the same chipset ("Intel Corporation
82865G Integrated Graphics Device") and the same driver (i810).
Additionally, when I installed Ubuntu on my co-worker's computer
(identical to mine), it experienced the same problem. This is on a fresh
install of Breezy (co-worker) and a dist-upgrade from Hoary (mine).
