what I did:
I noticed that the packages klibc-utils and libklibc seemed to be the wrong version.  I downloaded these and did a reinstall of the kernel
apt-get install --reinstall .....
no errors 
booted fine

Use thse versions:
klibc-utils_1.0.14-1ubuntu4_i386.deb
libklibc_1.0.14-1ubuntu4_i386.deb
