I haven't checked for a newer BIOS, but a complete install from a recent
Dapper Live CD has solved the problem. I now have a fully booting
system, and no longer have access to the original kernel. Sorry for the
vagueness, but I haven't got round to installing ndiswrapper for the new
system and have to use XP to connect to the net :)
