There's a problem when you have a "newer" card that:
1 - Has a bug with the latest drivers
2 - Doesn't work with the legacy drivers (that are like... some years
old, I guess).

Also, you'r making it harder to upgrade just a driver from the
restricted modules.
What if you have an issue with the latest X restricted kernel module
and only the latest Y restricted kernel module works with your HW?
