I guess I am approaching things from a more "blunt" angle. Everyone
needs to use the latest drivers possible (so legacy cards need one set
and every other card can use one set) to avoid precisely this situation.
Old drivers simply aren't going to have all the possible fixes and some
of those fixes could be security ones... If newer drivers break when
they shouldn't then NVIDIA need to be informed by whoever sees the
breakage so they can fix it next time round. Multiple versions of the
"same" driver is going to be packaging and user nightmare...
