Public bug reported:

Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 acpi-support (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Minor
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Hibernation works perfectly on my Desktop, but suspend to RAM does not.
When I log out and select "Sleep" from the log-out dialog, instantly, the screen goes black and the hard drives and power supply go off, looks good. But when I press the power button to wake it up, instead of quickly restoring the desktop, it just does a normal boot sequence, GRUB, loading the kernel, loading the services, starting X, loading Gnome etc...
As a quick test, I tried with Windows XP, and suspend to RAM works perfectly.
The motheboard is a bit old (4 years) but as far as I can gather from the BIOS manual, it supports ACPI, and suspend to RAM. I have enabled ACPI events, selected "S3" (had the choice between S1 and S3).
I don't really know what's involved H/W wise, so not sure what info is relevant/helpful. Should I attach the output of dmidecode or anything else ?
