Alright, I gave this some more tries. For some reason it seems like the SysRq combinations are not very reliable on my machine - I have to try a couple of times to actually get them to trigger.

Anyway, once I did "ifdown eth1" and the system froze, I could not get them to work at all. Seems like a *very* hard lockup.
