I tried the debugging procedure with kernel 2.6.15-20-amd64-k8, but nothing at all happened. I switched to a text console, did "ifdown eth1" and the system hard locked, as usual. Then, just to be perfectly clear, the SysRq key is actually Fn-Delete on my laptop, so I pressed Fn-Delete, held that down, held down Alt, and then pressed "1" and released all keys. Then I did the same thing again, but with "t" instead of "1".

There was no reaction at all.

One thing I noticed that I didn't see before was quite a few messages like

Apr 10 17:10:02 localhost kernel: [ 88.053174] bcm43xx: FATAL ERROR: BCM43xx_IRQ_XMIT_ERROR

in kern.log.

Also, the system does not hardlock when I simply do "ifconfig eth1 down", so I think it's something that dhclient does when releasing the dhcp lease that causes the freeze.
