[Bug 38231] Re: NEC CD-ROM drive not recognized

You may notice that in the original bug report, I state that the CD-ROM is not being detected by Breezy, whereas today in my answer to your question, I say that Breezy _does_ detect it.

At some point between 060405 when I reported the bug, and 060411 when my log reports I tried burning a CD in Breezy, I use synaptic to install the linux kernel for k7 instead of the default 386 [My processor is an AMD Athlon XP 2900]. 

Unfortunately I did _not_ record the exact time/date of the synapic update to Breezy, nor did I immediately check to see if this is the exact time Breezy started recognizing the device!  [sigh!]

Since then, I did similarly upgrade the default 386 kernel in Dapper to the k7 version, but that has _not_ made any change in Dapper's ability to see the device.  So, whether this whole kernel change aspect has any bearing on the affair, I really am not certain.
