I have a similar problem/symptoms. I have an Athlon 3000+ I think, It appears to hand, booting with quiet it stops at
Begin: Waiting for root file system... ...

I have an lvm partition with evms - root is /dev/evms/lvm2/roblvm/root. Running evms_activate after the timeout populates /dev/evms (which was empty - no .nodes - except for a 'dm' file).
