well now that we know that, what is the bug with Ubuntu?  The zd1211 driver is certainly built in the default kernels, all drivers are AFAIK.  Your specific configuration may have broken that particular driver.  This is not unknown, some configuration fails on pristine kernels because of errors in some drivers.  The kernel developers can't cover every single possible configuration.
