Nope, with /dev/input/mice it doesn't work (it works, but as ImPS/2, not synaptics):

(II) Synaptics touchpad driver version 0.14.3
(**) Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

...

(EE) Alps Touchpad no synaptics touchpad detected and no repeater device
(EE) Alps Touchpad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Alps Touchpad"

This rule for udev works!
