Broken means that the system is transmitting data to the printer, but the printer is printing garbled output or is ignoring the transmitted data altogether.

It took me a little while to debug the problem.   Sent data directly to /dev/lp0 (i think that helps eliminate a cups problem).  Finally, just on a whim, reverted back to older kernel, and everything worked fine.

Regarding dmesg, this is what i get in a 2.6.15-20 boot:

[  682.393844] lp0: ECP mode
[  684.067852] lp0: ECP mode

Examining /var/log/kernel.log, I only seem to see ECP mode for -20 kernel, and not -19 or -18.
